Arrangements for Deaf participants announced, ASL and LSQ

19 July 2022/in Uncategorized/by Alan Schietzsch

Sign language interpreters have been arranged for Deaf participants at most of the venues where the Holy Father will visit, but registration is required.

At this time we are accepting late registration for the Deaf section but prioritizing Deaf Indigenous for the Alberta venues.

ASL interpretation with both hearing interpreters (HIs) and Deaf interpreters (DIs) will be available at Maskwacis (25 July) and both the Holy Mass at Commonwealth Stadium and at Lac-Sainte-Anne (26 July).

LSQ interpreters are currently being arranged for the Holy Mass at la Basilique de Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré in Quebec City (28 July).

You must register:

Please email Father Matthew-Anthony Hysell at Matthew.Hysell@caedm.ca if you are both Deaf and Indigenous.

Participants must arrange for their own transportation and accommodations, but please contact the leadership of your respective indigenous community for funding and support.

Website: https://www.fortedmontonpark.ca/plan-your-visit/attractions/indigenous-peoples-experience

The Indigenous Peoples Experience was created through consultation with MOU Partners, the Métis Nation of Alberta, and the Confederacy of Treaty Six First Nations, alongside Elders and community members. The exhibit explores the rich cultures of local First Nations and Métis Peoples while encouraging guests to seek out truths lived by Indigenous Peoples before and after Canada’s founding. This opportunity to uplift Indigenous communities comes at a critical time in Canada’s reconciliation with Indigenous people. It is the first exhibit of its kind in Canada.

These stories, teachings, and memories have been passed through millennia. They reflect a rich and resilient history and deep connection to the land and seasons. Whether in Cree, Dene, Anishinaabe, Nakota, Blackfoot, or Michif, this shared knowledge is timeless. It does not just exist in the past. It is here today.

The traditional name of Edmonton is Amiskwaciy Waskahikan, meaning Beaver Hills House. This place was the traditional meeting ground for many Indigenous communities, including the Cree, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Blackfoot and the Métis Peoples.

Indigenous People’s Experience Shuttle

ETS will be providing free shuttle service both days, July 25 & 26 to Fort Edmonton Park

The Pope is coming to Sacred Heart Church of the First Peoples

8 July 2022/in Uncategorized/by Alan Schietzsch

A few months back when the Indigenous delegation from Canada went to Rome, Father Susai Jesu went along to support and accompany them. He brought with him a letter of invitation inviting the Holy Father to come to Sacred Heart Church of the First Peoples parish, which is an indigenous parish that has significance in the Canadian church as the National indigenous parish, especially in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, B.C., and the North.

Sacred Heart invited Pope Francis, hoping that their parish could serve as a highly symbolic venue for his pilgrimage of healing and reconciliation.

Elder Fernie Marty, who has served the parish Indigenous community for over twenty years, and Father Mark Blom, OMI, are excited and also aware that this visit has a profound role in reconciliation, not just locally, but for the entire province and country.

Parishioner Patricia Golosky gratefully hopes for forgiveness, healing and a new beginning.

They believe that the pope seeing the potential for healing that the example set by their parish represents can benefit all people across Canada, with the example of Jesus serving and dwelling among us.

Combining Christian faith harmoniously with elements of indigenous tradition, such as the architecture detail of a teepee at the altar, the church is being rebuilt after a tragic fire, with the aim of being ready for the Holy Father’s arrival.

To support or donate to their effort, please go to sacredpeoples.com/rebuild/.

In the meantime, Sunday Masses continue at the neighbouring school, as well as space generously provided for other days’ Masses at St. Clare parish and at Santa Maria Goretti Italian parish, both also in central-north Edmonton. For details, see the parish’s website and Facebook page.
